Aardvarck’s ‘Choice’ out on eat concrete

Mike Kivits aka Aardvarck hits us up with an new album. Below a little review on Boomkat:

Man like Mike Kivits aka King Of The Pigs aka Aardvarck gives the finely structured beats of ‘Choice’ on a killer 21-track album for Eat Concrete. Within its grooves he dismantles house, hiphop, jazz and electronic boogie soul with a strong cinematic feel, making for a superb listen. The tracks are generally shorter, more concise beat ideas tied with a defined sense of narrative and moving from bluest, piano-lead downbeats like ‘Dik’ to melodic beatless experiments and slow-crushed hiphop like it ain’t no thang. For many the luscious sweep of ‘Heal’ has gotta be the biggest surprise, introducing Kivits’s own MJ-esque vocals in luxurious fashion, while the unnamed female vox and pedigree drum programming of ‘Find the Cow..Almost’ make for another guaranteed soul stirrer. In ‘Gestolen 21′ he’s at his most mellow with swirling pastoral loops and slow bumped bass reminding of BoC, but it’s probably the shorter, more esoteric interventions that lend this set a brilliantly diverse yet coherent flow which will reward on repeated listens. A must check set!

Lockdown & Viral Radio Festival

After two succesfull editions of Viral Radio Festival in 2008 and 2009 we’re happy to announce that we will be part of this years edition. Viral Radio is an advanced electronic music festival that takes place at Trouw as well as Bimhuis, and is stretched over two days. We will be hosting De Verdieping (basement of Trouw) on Friday the 3rd of September (day 1) with Ikonika, LD, Cinnaman, DJ+ and King Shiloh Soundsystem as our guests. The main room will be covered by Gaslamp Killer of the brainfeeder family, Warp decendent GonjaSufi, Aardvarck and Viral Radio captain Juha. Day 2 is taking place at Bimhuis and will see Ras G (live), Darkstar (live) alongside the Dutch band Knalpot, Juha and Cinnaman.

Colors review

Last Saturday was one of the best clubnights for us in a long time! Not much to it then to check out the photos and videos below. Thanks to Joy Orbison, Jackmaster, Girl Unit, Presk, Trouw and all people that came out to witness, we had a blast! We will see each of them return to Colors without a doubt. Also keep your ears on the ground for our ADE program, It will be solid as a rock!

After this successful first edition with Roska and Untold as headliners, Colors now strikes back with an even fatter line-up than the one in May. No one else than London’s wonderboy Joy Orbison, and Glaswegian all rounder Jackmaster will make their Dutch debut and will set fire to Trouw’s Funktion-one soundsystem on Saturday the 24th of July. Next to that, Presk and Colors resident Cinnaman will be present to provide you with the ‘funk’ you need. This is definitely a night you should not miss out on!

Source Festival Review

Source Festival 2010, a well organised festival in the region of Utrecht with a capacity of around 7000 people. Names on the bill were Theo Parrish, Robert Hood and Mala, Aardvarck, Koze and Superpitcher to name but a few. Despite a beautifull day, the organisation had to evacuate all visitors around 21.30 because of the VERY bad weather conditions that struck the festival site all over sudden. The Source crew was therefor forced to cancel the second day of the festival. A big Shame, as the vibe was extremely good, and we had that real festival feeling we hadn’t felt for some time. We had the pleasure to work names like Mala, Silkie and Quest, while on their turn, they were able to play on King Shiloh Sound System, where we think their music belongs. It was a real honor to be part of a festival of such size and hopefully we will return to Source next year! Check out the photo and video review of our day at Source Festival below.

Lockdown blaast je weg op Source Festival 10 juli

Bij Lockdown ben je aan het juiste adres voor reggae, dubstep en experimentele beats.
Bredda Neil on King Shiloh Soundsystem staat garant voor onvervalste reggae in de Rastafari traditie. Het Britse dubstep-icoon Mala komt je trakteren op een portie experimentele beats. Silkie & Quest zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met het label van Mala, Deep Medi. Ondersteund door King Shiloh Soundsystem zullen ze de Lockdown stage op zijn kop zetten met hun melodieuze, soulvolle sound.

De Estlandse L-ow werd in de jaren negentig gegrepen door het speed garage virus maar legt nu al zijn passie in dubstep waarbij de aandacht voor detail en melodie groot is. Cinnaman is de man achter dubstepplatform Viral Radio en brengt een mix van progressieve elektronica, experimentele beats, UK funky, abstracte hiphop en rauwe dubstep naar Source. DJ+ is een ware veteraan als het aankomt op ondergrondse elektronische muziek. Hij is resident van Sonic Warfare en Dubstep aGoGo en radiomaker bij Red Bull Music Academy. Een jongeman die zich weet aan te passen, zowel aan de stroming als zijn publiek. Akkachar speelt net zo makkelijk ‘electrobreakzdubsteptechnobootymiamibass’ als Detroit georiënteerde deephouse. Een man vol verrassingen dus.
Een ding is zeker, de bassen op de Lockdown stage zullen je regelrecht van je sokken blazen.

Rwina labelboss Akkachar in the mix

The third mix for Lockdown has arrived and it’s by nobody else than Rwina imprint boss, Akkachar. A solid 30 minute mix with nothing else than fresh dubs and recently released tunes. Akkachar was able to establish himself, and his Rwina label, with the huge A Milli EP by Starkey late 2008, which was followed up by releases from Playdoe, the Scotland-based Taz Buckfaster, another Starkey, Eprom with his Humanoid EP and the lastest, but not the least, SRC with the mighty Gion Out EP. With forthcoming releases by Rachet, Swindle, Terror Danjah and Doshy, all scheduled later this year, we can say that Akkachar has steadily been building on a label that can be considered as the number one Dutch label of its kind. an impressive history

While hardly anybody was familiar with the the sound, Sonic Warfare kicked off on Wednesday 27th of December 2006 at the Melkweg under the leadership of Juha van ‘t Zelfde and was the first serious dubstep-orientated night in Amsterdam. By kicking off with a strong line up, including Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Skream, U Dub and Sgt. Pokes, Sonic Warfare set the tone, grew from strength to strength and could be considered as the platform where many major artists were introduced to the public. Think of the 1st anniversary with The Bug & Flowdan & Warrior Queen next to RSD and Coki, or the two Deep Medi Musik editions which had huge impact on the development of Dubstep in Holland and made clear that the genre wasn’t in it’s infancy any longer. Sonic Warfare didn’t just stick to Dubstep alone, but also started branching out to electronic crossovers with artist such as Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Ikonika, Lukid and Fox Gut Daata to name a few. After two years the opportunity was given to us to carry forth the vehicle, which we obviously took with pleasure. Have a look below to see all the goals that were accomplished over the last three and half years, including collaborations with Deep Medi, SubDub, DMZ, Sub:stance and Anti Social. A pretty impressive history, we think.

Loefah, Kryptic Minds, Youngsta, Strye and DJ+ on King Shiloh sound on 18th June is up next. Don’t miss out!

Presk in the mix

Presk, a producer hailing from Utrecht comes trough with the second Lockdown mixtape, where housy vibes are setting the tone. Presk recently joined the Planet KL agency, has releases forthcoming on various UK labels, and got playtime at Mary Anne Hobbs BBC 1Extra show with his Kriss Kross remix, Jump. With his vibrant live sets we can easily say it short, this guy is one to watch. Catch Presk live during Off Centre Festival on the 29th of May at the Melkweg. Sonic Warfare hits the airwaves

Sonic Warfare saw it’s first radioshow, yesterday at RBMA. DJ+ behind decks, AstroPoser with an exclusive live set and an interview with Programmer Hidde Pluymert, brain behind Off Centre Festival that’s taking place at the Melkweg, late May. Unfortunately we are not (yet) allowed to use the show in any kind of way, so no podcast, soundcloud or blogging yet, hopefully this will be sorted soon!
